This is LOCON

ALL OPINIONS EXPRESSED ON THIS SITE ARE THOSE OF THE AUTHOR(S) AND DO NOT REPRESENT THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA, THE DEPARTMENT OF NATIONAL DEFENCE, OR THE CANADIAN ARMED FORCES.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, what’s in a name?

LOCON are the people who make who make tactical decisions based on what they see. LOCON sits uncomfortably between the grunts and HICON, where decisions are made based on reports from below. “Lower control” also sums up what it feels like to work at the tactical level, where complexity is king and your authorities never seem to match your responsibilities.

Previously known as The Powder Horn, LOCON is a ledger of things that I’ve learned over a decade(+) in the Canadian Army. I got tired of bullshitting in the smoke pit and started writing things down. Call it an exercise in epistemic accountability.

I value pragmatism, plain speech, and evidence-based approaches to knowledge. The writing here will reflect that.

Principles of LOCON

  1. Bring something to the table: online knowledge exchange is a gift economy.

  2. Dialectic over debate: adopt what is useful and discard what isn’t. Falsifying evidence and feedback are appreciated.

  3. This project is non-partisan: critique policies not parties.
